Everything is Going A-ma-zzzing!
What did you missed in this last three month? What was happened? Here I come
But firstly, I want to ask you, my smart reader. Have you ever heard about Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) before? I hope so, but if not, you can find about it more in hnmun.org. Because, I will not explain about a whole HNMUN here (at least, maybe not now :D). But I will share my experience on it.
Last week, at International Relations department office, Jatinangor, I met with Mr. Teuku Rezasyah, the International Relations Expert, my ‘Dosen Pembimbing’ on my thesis. We talked a lot about my experienced in United States for HNMUN 2012. Started with the story of how I met his friend, Mr. Leonard Triyono an International Broadcaster in VOA (Voice of America) when I was transit in Doha international Airport, how I really want to get scholarship abroad, and so on. The conversation was really interesting. There are many useful and touching advices that he gave to me.
Then, he asked me to make an essay about my journey, what’s on my mind about United States, about the conference, about Harvard University, Boston, Washington DC, New York and my impression about all. He said “You have to go public with writing, then no need for you to find the scholarship, because they’ll gonna find you!” –Teuku Rezasyah-
So, here what I am writing…
Beautiful Chance in My Grateful Life
Started when a brave girl from Sikabu-kabu, Kabupaten 50 Kota, West Sumatera, decided to move out from her comfort zone, far away from home. Trying to reach her big passion and dream with spirit and effort, continue her study at Padjadjaran University, Bandung, West Java. Her ability in negotiations, diplomacy, and argumentation can be seen in every word that she says, she is such a talkative person, friendly, sociable, fast learning, and want to learn everything, that is why joining international relations department is one of her choice in life to focused on.
One day she saw the big picture Padjadjaran University’s participants of Harvard National Model United Nations 2010 (HNMUN) on a billboard for the first time. Her spirit burnt, why not? It is Harvard conference. It is mean that she got closer to one of her draem. She looked up for the information of this conference, which was big chance for her to grab another dream in her list. Got the information from International Relations Senior, she joined the selection of HNMUN 2012.
The first selection was coming up, every participant should speech in front based on the essay about global issue. Then we gave speech about United Nations. In the second selection, there was a Focus Group Discussion. In this second round, every person had to discuss one topic of global issue, which was surprisingly at that moment. Then moved forward to the last round, interview. Every single effort that she had done was paid. Here I am, Dina Hidayana in United States for Harvard National Model United Nations 2012.
After training in six months, and deep research in two months about my topic and committee based on my country. It was show time. Padjadjaran University as the representative of Romania. I would represent Romania in European Union Committee. The topic A was Common Foreign and Security Policy, and topic B was Immigration and Asylum Policy. Research, research and research. Actually in this committee, I would represent Romania with my partner, but there was a problem. So, it was only me struggling for our country as Romanian, and grabbed all the chances to cooperate with many countries from Europe to fulfill our country’s interest.
The conference was held on 16th-19th February 2012 at Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was an amazing and uncountable experience when I met 3000 participants from around the world, different mother tongues, different ethnics, different habits, different ways of thinking, but we were all here to share our knowledge, speak what was on our mind, together tried to find the better way to solve the global problem, make the better world as a part of this living world.
Speeching in front of representative of European countries, which was represented by many universities from all over the world, one of the challenges that I had supposed to do, and I beat it. After doing my speech about Romania’s position in the issue that we discuss, many notes came from many countries invited us to join with their coalition. United Kingdom which was represented by Yale University, Germany which was represented by Utretch University, French by Peruvian University, that was a few countries which was sent Romania a notes about joining with their coalition. But, as Romanian, I had to make sure that coalition that I would join was the best one for our country’s interest. Speech by speech, time by time, in moderated caucus and unmoderated caucus, I tried harder to put the amendment which was supported our interest. After a long discussion and debate, finally our big effort got the worth answer, our amendment was passed by enough voting.
Something that I realized in Harvard, the most prestigious university in the world, I could see how they become the best university based on the committee of Harvard’s students. They were totally smart, workaholic, high spirit, they have big effort in everything that they do. It is proved by the biggest conference that they have been made. It is the most wonderful and very best conference ever.
Aside the conference, there was also the cultural night, that was held on the night of course. It was in the third night of our conference. This show was called delegates cocktail hour. We all of the participants of Padjadjaran University wore Batik for the boys and kebaya for the girls. Everybody loves our outfit. Because, at that night, when we were entering the cocktail hour rooms, everybody just looked at us, everybody impressed with their first sight, it was unbelievable many persons asked us to take picture together, and they said “Where are you all come from guys, I really love your outfit, can I take picture with you?”. It was an amazing night, we supposed to be like a movie star, an actor and actress for one night. It really burnt our spirit of nationalism, we are all proud to be an Indonesian, and we love Indonesia with all of our heart. Something that I really adore to Boston is the way of social life of the people. When I was in trouble with my suitcase, there were many person with kind hearted helped me. When I was lost, and didn’t find the right way, their pleasure to spend their time to look up to their I-phone and searched the right way for me. It was a great moment that I never forget.
When we were in United Sates, we were not only doing the conference in Boston, but we had tour to Washington and also stayed in New York for a few days. I was so happy that at the moment we could stay at Consulat General of Republic of Indonesia in New York. That was so nice of the government of Indonesia to please us to stay three days there. It was an amazing chance and experience when I walked being a New Yorker. Every side of New York kind of reminded me in how modern and how comfortable when we have a good infrastructure in all public area, like park, clean street and modern public transportation. It made our life easier, that was something that I really missed from New York.
Have you ever feel, how excited we are when we got 100 points for mathematics test? It was really happy and excited right ?. It was my feeling when I could read the map of subway of New York. It is one of complicated map of subway I thought, but I could handle it. So, my friend and I, Puji Astiningsih, the girl who loves adventure like me, we decided to travelled around New York in our last two days there. First, We went to Columbia University, because I know that Columbia is one of the best university in the world. So it was the chance for me to visit this beautiful and lovable university in New York. I was so impressed with the location and the building of Columbia University, and I found the admission room to ask about hoe to enter the Master degree of International Affairs in Columbia University. The staff admission told me the requirement about how competitive to join with this university, but I am so sure, that when I have big effort and always do my best I can be the student of this university, hopefully.
Then, at that day, after had little tour in Columbia, Asti and I went to New York University, because my friend really want to go there. When we visited the gift shop, I found one of discount book about photography of New York and I bought it. It is kind of nice book, which has many pictures of important side of New York, and we decided to go to many places that we haven’t visit yet based on that book. After that, we decided to go to Georgetown cupcakes, then wall street, Brooklyn bridge and finally Time Square for the last. It was an amazing New York, and now I realize that how the people said ‘I Love New York’.
But it is not only how we amaze with modern country, but how can we adopt every single good habit, and how we can practice the better way of life ,if it relates and suitables with our country, our lovely Indonesia. As a student of International Relations, we suppose to be aware in every problem of our country and our world and what would be the real action that we could take for a better future of our world. Being an active and big passion youth, and future leader, and the agent of change, it really helps us how to get connected with real world, real life that we facing today. So, it is not my final journey, but it is still the beginning of my long and beautiful life. So let’s burn the spirit to reach mine, yours, and our destiny in happiness.
